Becky Chambers did it again! She stole my heart with her words! What would I do without her writing in my life?
First and foremost, I would risk it all for Dex and Mosscap. Especially Mosscap. That little robot is my world. It is my everything. I want nothing but happiness for it. Its joy and wonder at the world brings me joy. It is so delightful and sweet and curious and funny. It lives in my heart now. When it comes to Dex, they are so fucking relatable. They can be a frustrating character at times--especially with their penchant to do everything for themselves--but they still felt so human. Becky Chambers once again delivers characters that feel like actual people!
In addition, reading this book is both so tender and so sad. Dex is going through a period in their life where they feel unmoored. They don't know what they're supposed to be doing with their life, but they know that their current reality just has them feeling off. Through Dex (and their interactions with Mosscap as well) we have such beautiful discussions about both desires for solitude but also desires for life to be meaningful... Ugh. So good!
Finally, the ending of this book was so sweet and wholesome that I literally flung the book away from my body because I could not contain the cuteness in my body. I also proceeded to screech and shed a few tears. This is not hyperbole. The comfort the ending of this novel brought me was very real. I felt it in my heart, and it overwhelmed me with emotion.
I can't wait to read the next installment in this series!
P.S. It is an absolute crime that the sound editing/mixing of this audiobook was wonky. There were so many moments where it was obvious where portions were rerecorded because the voice of the narrator was suddenly deeper. Becky Chambers does not deserve this slander.
