Against the Fall of Night
by Arthur C. Clarke
A short novel that manages an epic scale, some strongly poetic images, and retains its high-tech feeling 70 years later. The writing is smooth and easy, with the exception of the extreme overuse of the word "presently". Almost every use of that word in this book could be deleted without affecting the meaning of the sentences it's in.
