The Sunken City by Emma V.R. Noyes

4.0

This is a very enjoyable sea-faring book!

This story follows Amare. She’s an orphan raised on a pirate ship with her Uncle Omar who was her father’s First Mate. She’s always felt different from others, and never understood why. One day she finds a treasure chest and touches a magic shell in there that starts to change her. One stormy evening, the ocean just calls to her so she falls overboard and sinks. When she wakes, she finds herself in the Sunken City being told she’s the Lost Princess, that she’s a sereia, and that she is the one prophecies to waken the Fallen Witch. As Amare tries to adapt to her new life, navigating as a Princess, gaining new friends, and even first love, she starts being hunted by monsters and has to find a way to stop them, which also causes Amare to question a lot of things she has learned about herself, her past, and her parents and she’s determined to solve the mystery no matter the danger.

First off, I really enjoyed the idea and concept of this book. I mean I love books set at sea. And this book is set both on the ocean and in the ocean, and is filled with pirates! If I read it correctly, this seems to take place in our world some time in the 1700s, but those in the Sunken City are much more advanced, and so have clubs and dancing, rock and roll and pizza
