House of Roots and Ruin by Erin A. Craig

This kinda reminded me of Twilight — I'm not sure it is to Verity's benefit that she felt so much of Bella Swan.
Verity has lived a very shelterd life, and falls for the first boy she meets. She has very little agency, and moves as the plot demands. But that's OK! With her background, this could have been a good "lamb to the slaughter" character, and I think I would've enjoyed this more if she was not so obnoxiously stupid and gullible.

It might be my memory playing tricks with me, but I feel like the first book was a bit more eerie and atmospheric. The first 50% of the book had no tension at all. It did manage to have a few creepy moments later in the book, but they were few and far between.
