The Burning Season
by Caroline Starr Rose
Perfect for fans of Alone and Hatchet, this book centers on a young girl, Opal, who lives and is training in a fire tower in the Gila National Forest of New Mexico. I love how well novels-in-verse work for stories where characters are dealing with survival, fear, natural elements, and big feelings, and all of these are part of Opal’s story. Caroline is such a great storyteller (and she excels at well-researched stories), and you really feel her home state come to life in this one. The fear of fire rang very true for me, and it’s a timely subject in our world (especially where I live). Don’t miss the author’s note at the end. And, bonus, the cover is fantastic.
Moderate: Fire/Fire injury
Minor: Death of parent, Injury/Injury detail
