Imagine being trapped on an island like Robinson Crusoe, except you are in the middle of the desert in Australia and you were kidnapped, drugged, and stolen away.
This Printz honor book is a tale of survival, a thriller/horror story (like the girls in the Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Gemma is constantly trying to escape from the place in the middle of nowhere where no one will find her unless she can get out alive). It is also a story of incredibly complicated feelings, which adds richness and makes it really come to life.
I enjoyed this book, and in many ways it felt like an expanded short story given the arc of the tale, rather than a 300 page novel. For this reason, I don't know if teens would be captivated enough to make it through, but I could certainly be wrong.
Recommended for those who like survival tales, complicated and forbidden romance, like the book How I Live Now minus the war.
