Twilight by Stephenie Meyer

1.0

Twilight gets three stars for nostalgia and for a straightforward yet satisfying story.

Twilight gets one star for the grotesque amounts of misogyny, and downright abuse that practically drips off each page once Bella and Edward become a thing. How many times do we read about him picking her up against her will? Forcing her in and out of cars? Forcing her to do anything?

I'm relieved that Bella gets angry and speaks up A COUPLE OF TIMES. But mostly, she just goes with it. Actually, she suffers the abuse then swoons over how perfect and angelic Edward is. It's very clear by the end of the book she is co-dependent on Edward and its gross. There is no denying this relationship is toxic and is not a good example to young people about what love should look like. Cringe galore.

ALL of that being said, I STILL found this to be less painful to revisit than picking up Fourth Wing to try again. Double barf.
