Chain-Gang All-Stars by Nana Kwame Adjei-Brenyah

This book is fucking incredible and once you read it, you’ll never not be thinking of it. The Hunger Games, Big Brother, and ESPN meets the Prison Industrial Complex but 1,000 times more violent, socially complicated, and ethically challenging. It is visceral and honest, and although it’s dystopian, is it really?

I don’t know what’s more disturbing: the details within the story or how so many people aren’t surprised by this depiction of society. There really is just so much to unpack with on this one, and while it ultimately details the hideous truths of mass incarceration and the systemic racism within the justice system, it will also make everyone feel the weight of their privilege and challenge our collective definition of America.
