I went into this book fairly cautiously, understanding that it was dealing with the death of a sibling/son and the grief that goes with that. Because of that and making sure I was OK going forward, this took me a little bit to read.

I did enjoy this book. Its one of those ones where upon re-read I'll notice more details, more connections.

As it was, I enjoyed the perspectives we got. Each one was unique to it's character. Their grief, how they handled it, how they were living with it, how they were hoping to move on or grow with it.

I particularly really enjoyed the stories, from those of Cherokee tradition, to ancestory, to the character's own histories. It gave me warm feelings and reminded me of listening to my grandparents tell stories. Particularly Ernest. We didn't get his perspective, but I was rooting for him the whole book.

There's a theme of stories having an open ending. Which, at first, I had problems with, but as it continued through the book, found it was pretty unique and left me pondering. The book itself ended the same way, which gives this prospect of hope and growth to the family we've been following.

CW: Death of a sibling/son, police shooting, grief, gun violence, assault, stalking, racism, slurs, Alzheimer's, Foster care, colonization, Trail of Tears.
