The Second and His Bonded by Kiki Clark
4.5
#0.5 A New Pack for New Year: ★★★✮☆ | 3.5 stars
#1 The Alpha and His King: ★★★★☆ | 4 stars
#2 The Second and His Bonded: ★★★★✮ | 4.5 stars
This was a great follow-up to the first book in the series. And, one I was especially excited about after meeting Kieran in Book 1. We also get more hints at the macro plot for this story, while getting a satisfying book length story too.
I absolutely adore Kieran. He's spent his life being shunned for something outside of his control. He yearns for the closeness of pack, but has absolutely no idea how to go about doing it. And, is constantly worried he's going to be sent away. I basically wanted to hug him the whole book.
Bennett the perfect match for Kieran. While his a strong, dominant, enforcer, at his heart he just wants to care for the people he loves, and if anybody needs someone to care for them it's Kieran.
Three Thoughts:
1. I love the casual diversity in this series. Bennett is a Black man, there are mentions of transgender packmates, and multiple queer relationships.
2. I love how much Bennett wants to care for Kieran. But, not because he sees him as incapable, but rather because he knows Keiran deserves someone his supports him and accepts him. And, he wants to be that person. "When you're ready to let go of all that worrying, you let me know. I'm ready to help you carry it." *swoon*
3. The found family vibes in this book are just as good as Book 1. I love all the side characters, and how much emphasis this story puts on the importance of pack bonds and friendship.
If you enjoyed the first book, I think you're going to love this one. I can't wait to keep reading in this series.
content warnings: loss of a loved one (in the recent past), familial abuse (emotional and physical), panic attacks, violence, murder, sex (on page)
