Okay Barbra Kingsolver has done it again. This retelling of David Copperfield (which I’ve never read) follows Demon, child of a single mother in Appalachia in a tragic coming of age story plagued by the foster care, child labor, the opioid epidemic, in addition traditional aches and pains of adolescence.

Kingsolver’s writing and her ability to shape her characters through language is what really stands out to me. Reading this felt reminiscent of something I would have read in high school English class in a way more accessible way. I loved this book for its rich characters and complex plot. The characters truly come to life and I loved Demon even when I didn’t always like him.

Absolutely loved this one and it’s making me feel motivate to do some Kingsolver rereading this year.
