This was a really fun read! This is the first of this author's works that I've read, and felt it was a great introduction. The world felt vast and complex, yet explored in a palatable way. The characters were complex, layered, and unique, and I liked that we got pieces of their personalities and backstories over time, as opposed to all right away in the beginning. However, I did sometimes feel that there was too much time spent in flashbacks, and some of the romantic moments (though not many) felt a bit heavy-handed/eye-roll-inducing. Kaz's character was also a bit hard to swallow at times; despite his rough childhood, he seemed too skilled, knowing, creative, well-connected, well-respected, and ruthless for a 17-year-old. Though I did like that he was morally-gray, which usually is not the type of character I like.
Mild Romance Spoiler:
I was a bit disappointed that the straight romances received more attention than the queer romance. In fact, I felt that Jesper's chapters were way too short in general (as he was my fave), and we didn't even get ANY from Wylan's POV. I hope they get more page-time in the sequel.
There were a few times where I had to suspend belief for events to seem plausible, but overall the plot was really fun and creative. I can't wait to read the sequel!
