Brace for Impact: A Memoir

A book that found me exactly when I needed it in my life. There are so many parallels I could draw to my own life about Gabe’s struggles with identity, belonging, and searching for community. The story was heartbreaking and stomach churning—especially thinking about my own experiences with disability, serious sports injuries, a difficult home life growing up, and feeling like I don’t fit in—but it was also humorous and light-hearted at the right moments. Gabe writes in a way where I could deeply feel the emotions of every moment. I laughed as much as I cried (a lot). Once I picked it up, I didn’t want to put it down, and blew through all 400 pages in about two days. Only real criticism is that I wish there were more of it. I would have happily read another few chapters about her return to sport after the injury instead of the three-year time jump, especially since the derby-focused sections were exciting and fun, even as someone with minimal derby knowledge. But I can also understand why it was written the way it is (the last chapter reads more like an afterword than a final chapter). Overall, a new favorite book of mine that will definitely stick with me.
