To give this book anything less than 5 stars feels like a travesty.

The writing is so clever and so detailed and throughout. I really feel Samantha Shannon will become one of the great notable writers of our time for this series.

While set in the same world as The Priory of the Orange Tree, this is a prequel and can be read completely independently as there is a significant gap in time.

It features eight POVs and I really enjoyed each character and what they brought to the overall arching plot. Although not all of the characters physically cross paths; their stories are all interwoven and tied together in really interesting ways.

This novel also takes multiple looks at motherhood and the many faceted emotions and approaches to motherhood and treats them all with an equal amount of respect and validity and it’s really refreshing to see an author acknowledge there is not one path for us all.

As we have come to expect from Samantha Shannon; this is inclusive of so many preferences and does a really fantastic job of showcase the complexity of human thoughts and desires without it feeling forced to fit a box.

I honestly could go on and on about the elements of this I enjoyed but I would just encourage you to go and read it.

It’s high stakes, high fantasy, its inclusive and there’s magic, dragons and animal sidekicks as well as some kick ass female characters.
