Manga Shakespeare: Richard III by William Shakespeare, Richard Appignanesi

3.0

[2nd book read for the Cramathon, December 2014]

I enjoyed reading this: the art was generally nice and well done (although this style isn’t quite my taste for manga, I still thought it looked good) and the play itself is engaging, at least in this edited-down version. Although it is quite hard to follow, since you have to remember not only all the different characters, but their family houses and their relationships with one another, the character profiles and family tree at the beginning are a big help.

Overall, I enjoyed reading it (and, like most graphic novels, it goes by very quickly), but wasn’t blown away. I’m not sure whether I personally would prefer the original play to this or not, but I think that for those wary of reading Shakespeare in graphic novel format could be a fun introduction, but probably works better with his simpler, non-historical, plays.
