This is in the Montana Battle of the Books list and I’m reading all the books in the list. I’m sure kids would like the excitement of the book. I feel weird though when kids books throw in things like parental death without really digging in. It’s part of the characters, but it feels random. I dunno. I like that the book talks about how the Cowlitz Tribe knew about the volcano and mentions their name for it. A small nod from a scientist character to indigenous knowledge.

Oh, and the detail of the vipers in the 1902 Martinique volcano? Whew!
