wow, what a remarkable debut novel! shelley read's lyrical and poetic prose won me over from the very beginning. this is the kind of book you annotate and mark up everywhere because every aspect, from character descriptions to the portrayal of nature, grief, and heartache, is beautifully crafted. this is the epitome of a show-don't-tell approach, with victoria narrating her tragic experiences, overcoming obstacles, planting her roots and moving forward. there is not a lot of dialogue exchanges, so for some, it may feel slow for those unaccustomed to extended narration. personally, I relished every meticulously written word.
