Hex Hall by Rachel Hawkins

5.0

Ok, I am in LOVE with this series. I feel like it was just perfectly crafted with all of the soft spots I have in a young adult fantasy book. A sarcastic and totally relatable main character, a love interest who reminds me of a kinder Draco Malfoy, a best friend who was her own awesome character (not just around when the main character needs them), a school for magic teens (!!) and the icing on the cake for me, I even loved the polt.

I find that normally I don't love the plot in these kinds of stories as they are usually boring and I only care about the characters but I found that Hex Hall has a great story that I never found boring. The climax of the plot was good and while lots in the book was predictable (which I can appreciate too) there was a nice balance of things both Sophie and I didn't see coming and that made this book so much fun to read and really immersive. All of the characters had their own motivations and personalities which made this such a rich story for me.

There was never a dull moment in this book and I really struggled to put it down... may have stayed up till 4 am to finish it because I was HOOKED. It isn't very difficult to read and the law of this fantasy world is intriguing yet easy to wrap your head around. There is mature themes implied yet we don't get anything that is too graphic, which is a nice break from other young adult book that have come out more recently. This book really reflected on issues that young teens face and I loved that Sophie was so relatable to most people, especially with her sarcasm. This book never left me feeling like a chapter was boring, it was packed with adventure and fun the whole way through.

Ok, so there were some issues... SO, the book is a little simple. I'm not about to claim its the best book I've ever read because its carly directed at teens or young adults. My other main issue, WHAT IS HER NAME? On the back of the book it says Sophie, but in the version of the book I read her name randomly changes to Sophia so many times and it really annoyed me. (I like consistency ok?!) Even Goodreads calls her Sophia Mercer on the page about her... There may have also been a few typos but overall nothing that distracted too much from the book. Even with some small problems this book is one of my new personal faves simply because I enjoyed it. A book doesn't have to be an example of literary genius for me to love it, just needs a good plot and great characters, both of which this book has plenty of.

It was just a seriously feel good book for me. I can't wait to start reading the next... Thank you Rachel Hawkins!
