Ink by Alice Broadway

3.0

*3.5/5 stars*

Ink has a concept I have never encountered in a book before. The fact that the center of the beliefs of the people come from their tattoos is really intriguing (and makes me want to get more myself!) and the inclusion of fables from their history was really cool.

The story follows Leora, a sixteen year old girl who is about to decide what job she will take within her community. The marks on everyone's skin tells their stories, and Leora would love to be one of the few female inkers in town. But when a public marking happens that marks the man as a forgotten, Leora starts remembering things from her past. Now she's in over her head trying to figure out the secrets that are being kept from her from the only person she has left, her mother. Can Leora figure out why there are so many secrets, and what exactly the town's motive is.

Though I really enjoyed reading the story, the ending left me wanting more. There was really no resolve to any of the questions that came up during the story, and it left it off in a place that I just wasn't captured by. There were a few things that came up right near the end that just didn't get that much attention, and some things that I just had questions about that didn't fully make sense to me. But I loved the relationship between Verity and Leora, there aren't many books with positive female relationships that don't turn on each other. I was also interested in the reading of the marks, which I wish there had been more detail about. I really thought that the story was intriguing and going somewhere, it just happened to fall flat right at the end unfortunately.

I may pick up book two to see if anything gets resolved or the story gets more in depth, but I don't feel a rush to go out and get the next one immediately. I did give it an extra .5 stars because of the characters, since their relationships were strong and positive, and that was pretty refreshing.
