Secret Obsession by S. Massery
4.0
4 Stars.
This is the story of Miles and Willow. Admittedly, to date, my least favorite in this series. I started this and put it down because I just wasn't connecting with it the way I wanted to. I also was shocked in how it popped off. Completely unexpected. I guess to do that in a reader is impressive, but I felt it a little over the top. I say that to say this - I felt that way then but now since I have read the entire book, I understand it better. It makes sense and it held depth and weight to the point of the entire plot and foundation of the book.
I found in the beginning and in through the middle of this book reading Miles and Willow was hard. It wasn't that intense, heavy chemistry the other couples hit with. It felt forced and awkward; lacking emotion. Again, as you move through the book, I understand why S. Massery wrote this as she did. It just did not make it easier to read. Willow is traumatized from what happened with Knox and other things in her life. She disassociates from everything to try and work through things and doing so it leads to a darker path she was unprepared for. Miles was the Goalie for the Hawks and also crazy about willow and had been for a long time. Because of the mental space Willow was in, it took alot for Miles to reach her. And you guessed it, he had to do alot of messed up crap to get there.
Severely possessive, controlling, overly protective but also crazy MMC. It worked but it was just a different style. Willow was closed off and I believe that was why I felt it so hard to connect with them. It wasn't giving for me.
Despite that challenge for the book, I enjoyed it over all. I really liked the angst and stalker myself it provided. I loved the relationship the group had together as well.
A 4 star and an overall good read. If you struggle, keep going, it is a good book. It's just different from the others. Be very mindful of triggers and red flags because this book is filled with them.
