The Fearless King by Katee Robert

5.0

4.5

Journey King has always been confident in her ability to run the family business successfully, and since her mother's ousting from Houston, she's gotten her chance to show that she can definitely step up. That is, until her father returns and decides it's time to flex his majority shares in Kingdom Corp by becoming more involved in the company.

Not sure what her father's end goal is, one this is for certain, his presence brings back all the horrific memories of childhood at the hands of her father, which is enough to throw Journey and her brothers off their game in running the company. Journey knows she needs help from someone outside the family and outside of the company. The only person she can think to go to is Frank Evans.

Frank has spent years building his family name back up after its fall from grace when his father was convicted for a murder he didn't commit. Frank knows better than to get involved with volatile King family. But when Journey King comes to him for help with her vulnerability on on full-display, he can't turn her away. As they investigate the reason for her father's return, and try to make sure the company stays afloat when all is said and done, the simmering feelings they have for one another threaten to boil over, but first they'll have to survive being in her father's cross-hairs.

I guess I'll start with a little item that didn't really work one way or another for me on the this story. And that is the fact that Katee Robert decided to slip in the trope of the "fake boyfriend". I guess in order for Frank's sudden presence in Journey's life to feel legitimate they concoct the story that they've just begun dating. Obviously it's a valid idea, but I felt like it was something thrown in at the last minute as, after all is said and done, looking back, it was really an underutilized aspect of the story. It didn't bring them into contact more often than they already were, and it didn't really gain Frank anymore access to the Kings than he was able to get anyway in my opinion. It was really a moot point for me.

But now that that's out of the way, I can talk about how much I loved that Katee Robert took a storyline that could have followed certain preconceived notions of how a romance is supposed to go and turned it on it's head. I'm speaking specifically about the fact that even though Journey shows her vulnerabilities and she certainly has a lot of baggage where her relationship with her father is concerned, she doesn't wait for others to step in and save her, she saves herself time and time again. But it's never in a reckless way, running headlong into battle, no. Journey knows exactly what her capabilities and strengths are and she plays to them in order to succeed / survive. When she goes to Frank for help it's not so he can charge in and take care of her problems, it's so they can work together.

Frank for his part, and based a lot on his familial past, wants to swoop in and save the day for Journey. He wants to take her out of the equation of danger, but in order for Journey to move forward and to have some semblance of healing from the past, he has to let her take charge most of the time. I love that he does. With little to no conflict with that scenario Frank understands Journey's need to face her demons. They are a wonderful pairing and Katee Robert wrote the best kind of book / plot to bring all of this out in her characters in the best way. The Fearless King is romance and thrilling, family and drama.

I do wish we would have gotten a little more of the friendship angle that Journey has with Samara (whom readers will remember from [b:The Last King|36003789|The Last King (The Kings, #1)|Katee Robert|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1503970844s/36003789.jpg|57571231]). It's there, but I could have used a few more scenes of them.

A lot of secondary focus is placed on the youngest King sibling Eliza whom I'm assuming is going to be the next one to get a book. As stated above with the female friendships, I'm hoping similarly that we'll get more of a sisterly bond between Journey and Eliza in her book. Not giving away anything, I can see why Katee Robert didn't elaborate on this in Journey's book, I'm just hoping it's been saved for Eliza's as I really love the relationship the siblings seem to have with one another (brought closer by the past they all survived) and I'd love to see it expanded upon.

Overall, I really enjoyed Journey and Frank's book. So far, this has been a stellar series from Katee Robert. I can't wait to see how things continue to unfold for the Kings.
