cilie 's review for:
The God of Small Things
by Arundhati Roy
medium-paced
Somewhat uneven pacing, starting quite slowly and then slowing down and becoming very descriptive. I felt it held me at a distance from the characters, which is a shame because is the essence of the plot was a heartbreaking story, that I didn't really have any feelings about.
The narrative structure that jumped around in time without notice also confused me, and I usually prefer a nonlinear story, but this one really didn't work for me. Towards the end the story kept going back to one pivotal point in time and branching of in different directions from there, which sounds interesting, but felt repetitive and every time I thought the story was just a bout to wrap up, we had to do yet another round.
The heart of the story good and I can see why the writing is often described as beautiful, but it just wasn't for me.
