The Scent Of May Rain by Ray Epstein

4.0

In Jewish folklore, a golem is a clay creature that has been magically brought to life.

The Scent of May Rain follows a Jewish golem woman, Esther, through her hundred years of life. She was created to be a surrogate mother for the artist’s daughter. He instilled her with narrowed ideas of what is acceptable behavior for women. Throughout the book she plays a variety of roles as she explores her own humanity.

It’s a thought provoking piece of work that challenges the expectations of love, family, tradition, religion, and sexuality. I really just wanted more! The novella is only 48 pages and spans over 100 years of her life. There was so much more to the story that goes untold, and leaves much up to the imagination of the reader. Even still, this was a remarkable piece of writing and art.
