The Castaways by Lucy Clarke

adventurous dark mysterious tense fast-paced

4.0

The Castaways is a mystery/thriller set between 1999 and the present day. Back then, Lori and her sister Erin are taking the holiday trip of a lifetime, going from London to Fiji with a couple of stops in between. Unfortunately, what starts off as a great trip is marred when the sisters have a fight the night before they're supposed to board the plane to reach their final destination. Lori ends up taking the flight alone - but the plane never reaches Fiji.

In the present, Erin is still consumed by what happened to her sister. She has every newspaper clipping, every article, explored every avenue but she is still left in limbo. Until she receives a phone call to tell her that the pilot has been found - alive.

Erin makes it her mission to go and speak to him, and find out what really happened. In the meantime, we get alternating chapters from Lori in the past to follow along with her story.

I really enjoyed this. It was a solid thriller, and I liked how it was written. It took me out of a reading drought and made me want to read more thrillers. While the story went much the way I thought it would, it was still very enjoyable and I liked how the story progressed. If you're good at spotting "tells" in thrillers, you won't have any major shocks here, but if you're looking for a decently written book to read with a good, solid plot, then you could do much worse.
