Howl's Moving Castle by Diana Wynne Jones

4/5

My absolute FAVORITE Studio Ghibli film! I read a hot take, and I'm apt to agree, that the film is told through Howl's perspective and the book is told through Sophie's perspective. Those stories are similar, but not the same. Even the memorable scenes aren't the same. One nice thing about the book compared to the film, which is almost always true, we get more backstory! And do we ever get more backstory!! On both Howl and Sophie!!!

If you loved the film, then you're sure to enjoy the story from which it is adapted. I absolutely recommend it!

[[[[[Look I'm not saying this is a spoiler, cause it's really not a spoiler if you've seen the film. But perhaps like me it never really clicked do to how the film handled it. So Imma be nice and give you some space if you would rather make this discovery on your own and return later, rather than being told rn]]]]]

And you may even realize that rapey alleyway scene, you know the one [which is high key worse in the book], was Howl's poorly executed Lathario antics during a time loop callback to "Find me in the future Howl! I know how to save you~". It's not great, but that knowledge does make it feel better; even though story really could do without.
