In principle I liked it but it is just not sustaining my attention, one of the problems I think is the large cast who feel fairly nebulous still despite being about half-way in. I really wanted to like it, lots of people have said how great it is and it covers a period I am interested in - the Opium Wars. But I've read lots of other stuff whilst this has been on the go and after more than 2 months I'm still chewing through but only when I have nothing more compelling. I really liked Ghosh's the Glass Palace and i am sure I'll come back to this some day but meanwhile its on the can't finish shelf.
