Črna mati zemla by Kristian Novak might just be my favorite book of the year so far—and it's only February. This novel completely shattered my preconceived notions about Croatian literature and has convinced me that I’ve been missing out on a treasure trove of Croatian authors. From the moment I picked it up, Črna mati Zemla pulled me in, weaving an atmospheric, immersive picture of Međimurje, a part of Croatia I knew little about.

The novel is a rollercoaster of emotions. It paints a vivid portrait of Matija, the main character, and takes us through his struggles with childhood trauma and the complex ways in which he copes with it. Novak’s exploration of imagination as a coping mechanism, especially for children facing hardship, is both poignant and thought-provoking. The way Matija’s imagination follows him into adulthood, affecting his relationships with others and himself, is strikingly real. It’s a powerful reminder of how past trauma can shape us in ways we don’t always fully understand.

What I particularly appreciated about the book is how it made me reflect on my own childhood and the ways in which I, too, may have used my imagination to navigate difficult emotions. Novak doesn't shy away from depicting the long-lasting effects of these coping mechanisms, showing how they can create barriers between us and those we love. The novel gives readers a chance to reflect on their own connections to the past and how they shape the person we become.

Črna mati Zemla is a brilliant exploration of trauma, imagination, and emotional growth. Novak’s writing is rich, haunting, and deeply human, leaving me thinking about the characters long after I finished the book.
