I liked the concept, and the story was immensely heartbreaking in the end and such an emotional roller coaster. Yet I felt the story took place in the wrong time period. I almost wish the era was kept ambiguous and left up to the reader to decide when the book was set. It honestly felt more like a 1950/60's era small town, and I only remembered it was in the present day when they pulled out cell phones.
Also, everything kept working out for Ernest to an unbelievable degree. He steals the typewriter back after Beatrice sell it, only to make a new friend through this; and somehow manages to get it back (in pieces) after it gets sold to a collector (I can't imagine how much his dad has to spend to get it back).
I would recommend it as a quick read for anyone looking to get out of a reading slump, or starting their journey into magical realism.
