Three Dark Crowns
by Kendare Blake
This one really surprised me. For some reason, the premise didn't grip me and I thought it would be too hard to accept. But it wasn't. The author makes it work splendidly. I believe that there could be an island in which the queen is always chosen this way because the story is expertly told.
I do have some misgivings. The present tense would ruin a lesser novel and I deeply wish it wasn't written in it. Some of the romance stuff feels drawn out and unnecessary. I saw a big twist coming very early on. Each queen seems surrounded by basically the same cast of characters with slight variations.
However, the strengths easily overcome the weakenesses and I heartily recommend this book to YA readers. It's fairly original, quite engaging, and kept me wanting more. I like the characters a lot and I really enjoy learning about the deftly created world. I will definitely read the next one, may it be released swiftly!
