Giovanni's Room by James Baldwin

the imagery in this book is so beautiful omg

my favorite quote is on the first page actually: “my face is like a face you have seen many times. my ancestors conquered a continent, pushing across death-laden plains…” i think i carried this quote with me throughout the book because i put a lot of thought into baldwin’s choice to make the main character white and blonde

but also, even though this book was published in 1956, there is no other queer story like it to date. i read this so fast because it was complex and painful and beautiful… and to think baldwin released this during this time… one of the best writers in our history me thinks
