The writing is wonderful and the opening chapters are solid. After that, it falls flat. The characters are strongest when discussed or operating alone, but Cutter struggles with individualizing their voices in a group. The plot itself is fine, making for some disgustingly effective body horror. Cutter's prose is incredibly strong on a technical level, but what's missing in comparison to King is fear and terror-- the descriptions are icky but not visceral. I'm interested in reading more of Cutter's work, but I will likely forget this quickly.
