Witch Child by Celia Rees

1.0

I loved the idea of a hidden journal found within an old quilt. I loved the introduction "I am Mary. I am a witch." I disliked the rest of the book. I could understand if this was a historical fiction piece talking about witchcraft in and around Salem, witch hysteria or even the unusual theories of why the later Salem Witch Trials happened at all, but this was none of those things. This wasn't even a fantasy fiction where Mary is a witch and the reader sees her use her powers.
SpoilerRees tries to enter into the fantasy realm when Mary sees the past, present and future of the sailor boy.
but it just doesn't work. I finished this because I had high hopes it was going somewhere but I feel like I just read the longest, more banal summary of a book. I know there is a sequel, but I can't bear the thought of reading another 350 pages of this story.
