Crying in H Mart by Michelle Zauner

emotional hopeful inspiring reflective sad medium-paced

5.0

I've heard of Japanese Breakfast for years, but it wasn't until a few months after listening to her latest album that I really listened to Michelle's music and immediately after I started to become interested in Michelle and the background of her music as a whole.

When I heard she had written a book, it was right around the time briefly after my own mother died. Coping with my own grief, I rediscovered reading and have begun to use it as a solace to connect with my mother in light of her passing. I knew that this book would likely be heavy emotionally, and it was. But I have no regrets reading it. It was deeply cathartic. This book perfectly encapsulates what it feels like to lose a parent as a young adult just after gaining your own independence, and the profound trauma that such a loss creates. With her means of using food to connect her emotions and memories with her mother, and the way she is so clear and concise in describing the complicated emotions in regards to witnessing her mothers illness was something I related to.

This book is amazing, I would recommend it to nearly anyone, but I think some of its contents especially may serve as amazing material for grief counseling. It has for me at least.

I can only hope the movie can accurately capture the emotions this book managed to convey.
