vcka 's review for:
Before Mars
by Emma Newman
spoilers at bottom
love love love love loved it
couldn't put it down most of the time
really great book
sincere thanks to Emma Newman for being such an incredible writer who really REALLY integrates the autistic experience inside it.
I loved the autistic vibes, neopronouns/non-binary main character, depressed and anxious protag, discussion of psychosis, and everything else about the book
I love knowing what they don't know, and working out what I don't know
I enjoy the order of the first 3 books
Emma Newman taps so strong into my brain that I feel so close to the environment in the book. the thought processes of her characters is just perfect. I love hearing the inner monologues. I can't believe from the acknowledgements that she wanted to scrap the book because it's an absolutely incredible sight into an incredible mind.
I can't even sit here and write all the things I liked about it because it will just keep going and going
spoilers
.
right from the start I suspected that Anna had been there before, but Anna dismissed this theory. reading her own workings was so fun, i eventually got mixed up in her own thoughts and forgot my own theories. the way she went down a rabbit hole fuelled by her trauma is a testament to Emma Newman writing amazing characters. every rabbit hole she goes down is enough to drag us with it and feel so inside her mind we forget our own sleuthing
I just loved absolutely everything about this book.
this book is a 4.5 or 5 star to me
can't wait for next in series. I saw somewhere that it's from DEE'S POV!!!!! so I'm very excited. I'm so excited. I have loved seeing every character of the series intertwine in each other's books.
