The Penderwicks in Spring by Jeanne Birdsall
4.0

Ok this is an example of a time jump done Very Well. I was excited and apprehensive about this one, since I knew I wasn't going to get the Skye and Jane perspectives, and they are my favorite sisters. (Especially Skye!) But I was really pleasantly surprised that the books worked really well with just Batty and Ben, and I liked how the older sisters weren't gone completely, we saw them a lot and their personalities and developments shone through even if they weren't the main focus. I know that they were too old for the middle grade readers that Birdsall is writing for, and me reading this at age 16 is not exactly in that age range.

**some spoilers!**

But the heartbreaking plot line with Skye and Batty???????? Incredible, and incredibly sad! I cried every time I reread it. Amazing that she can write such a dark story into a children's book and still have it be poignant and not inappropriate.
