This book was definitely an odd one for me. I didn’t go into it knowing it was fanfic but it became very obvious very quickly. And that’s fine, I’ve got nothing against fanfic. But having been “converted” to a story that was not meant to be fanfic (likely so it could be sold as a book) it kind of struggled in my opinion.
I liked it alright but it was really hard to get into because there was so much clearly trying to be a fic without being one. Some scenes are clearly lifted from the source material and they feel like it. The characters didn’t ever feel like their own characters. They felt like the characters from the show with some swings into trying not to be. And there were a few places, at least in the audiobook where there was inconsistency. Where one thing was changed but something later didn’t match up.
Overall it’s kind of cute. But I think it was probably a better fic than book. I’d love to see the author work with original characters and story though because the writing is pretty decent. This particular story though is not one I enjoyed. Though, full disclosure, I don’t ship the pair this is based on and don’t really watch the show.
