Severed Heart
by Kate Stewart
This story is absolutely devastatingly beautiful
I read this book as more a standalone as not having read some of the others in this series. If you haven't read any of this series, I don't recommend starting with this one, because of the numerous characters having backstory that apply to this one. Not knowing all the smaller details of other characters didn't take away from Tyler and Delphines story, but having the full picture would have only made this story that much more emotional for me.
Tyler and Delphine are two forces to be reckoned with. Perhaps the most solid and grounded of all the MMC's in this series, Tyler has a sureness and steadiness to him. Delphine is a mouthy, brash beauty who has never gotten the easy road in life. She is a soldier of her own making and saves everyone around her but herself. She drowns her trauma in alcohol, locking her heart into a self inflicted cage.
The spice is there, but it is so romantic in nature. Nothing felt overly gratuitous and it was so perfectly placed within the story.
While years separate them, both Delphine and Tyler find a solace and understanding in the other's pain. Both have been deceived by the ones they trusted. They share a brutal honesty with one another, but more importantly a strong friendship and a calm to their personal storms.
Huge props to Kate Stewart because this book is LONG. Coming in over 600 pages, I was invested in every single chapter. She perfectly navigates past to present and dual POV. The story is so well paced, it doesn't feel that long. I actually longed for more of this story and plan to read the continued story of Tyler.
