Vision in White
by Nora Roberts
This was the first Nora Roberts I read. I see why she is so acclaimed now! What a gorgeous story.
Parker, Laurel, Emma and Mac are four childhood best friends who have a wedding business on Parker's family estate. Mac is the photographer. She's been messed up by her selfish, manipulative mother and doesn't believe she deserves love.
Carter is a clumsy, awkward ex-nerd, who came back to his hometown to be an English lit teacher. He's had a crush on Mac since high school, but she didn't even notice him back then.
I loved these two. Mac was a genuinely good person, she was very easy to like. She struggled at times but it was very easy to understand why, and she was always trying to be better at least.
Carter... He made the book. He was adorable. He was a little socially awkward and nervous in the most endearing way, and it was so relatable too. Some of his internal dialogue was eerily similar to mine. At the same time, he was unafraid to show love and make himself vulnerable, and he was very caring. Perfect man right there.
The story started a little slowly, probably because it's the first book in a series, there is the whole wedding business to set up and all the characters. Once it got going though, it was a charming, low-tension book. Don't expect gripping tension or pulse pounding suspense. It's straight romance, so it really focuses on the unfolding relationship, which is just delightful so that works well. There isn't much external conflict and the internal conflict isn't that huge either. You just see these imperfect characters come closer together and learn to trust each other. It's beautiful :)
I actually liked that these aren't drama queens but people who are honest, try to communicate with each other and solve conflicts. Sure it doesn't make for such an emotional roller coaster, but it's a very comforting read because of that. I can see myself returning to this book when I'm in a certain kind of mood and need that comfort.
These two are just lovely together. Honest, teasing and funny, their comfortable banter made me smile throughout the book. I can just see them being happy and cozy for the rest of their lives. Their love for each other was palpable and gave me the warm happy feels in the best way. It takes skill to achieve that, and I don't come across books that do it so well very often.
Once I got into the wedding planning world, I found I loved these girls and their circle and can't wait to read the others' story and stay in this world for a while longer. I'm glad it's a series!
It was also great to see such a solid portrayal of female friendship and women supporting each other. I love experiencing that vicariously. Whenever Mac was struggling, her friends were there for a debrief and to help her sort herself out. She wasn't left to wallow in angst, they were helping her understand herself and progress through the book. Also Parker is seriously cool. Can't wait for her book.
My only regrets were that her horrible mother didn't get more of a comeuppance, and that we didn't get to seeMac announcing her engagement to her friends. I can only imagine their excitement! I wish we could see her wedding too... Yes I'm a sap.
