This was an interesting mash up of the Chronicles of Narnia meets the Wee Free Men. Sorta. We listened to the audiobook as a family and the narrator wasn’t our favorite. Her accents were odd and she had a funny way of emphasizing certain words or syllables and uneven pacing. It made it seem drawn out or sing song at times. In fact, she became increasingly grating as time went on and I think the combination of her voice and wanting the story to get somewhere faster contributed to our overall enjoyment (or lack of) of the story.
We had some issues with characters and character development. We had major issues with Ifigenia’s name (seriously though) and her reaction over the blackberry debacle. We didn’t really like Prue. It seemed absurd that her parents would be so blasé about not getting their son back. It would have been good if the extraneous bits were left out and the point gotten to faster. Some folks have complained about the vocabulary, but that was one aspect that I loved. Overall a 3 with no interest in continuing the series… until I read multiple times the second book is better. Huh.
