The Wisteria Society of Lady Scoundrels
by India Holton
I was so very excited to his one it has been sitting on my shelf WAITING for me, so I picked it for book club assuming it would be a slam dunk. Unfortunately, I was pretty disappointed. I bought it from the romance section....that feels like a poor classification. Although I was pretty underwhelmed as a whole, the ending IS cute and romantic though, so take with that what you will.
The world building is kind of confusing to me. Like....all the sudden there are floating houses and magic etc .. with pretty much no context, BUT once you work through that, it become a quirky, funny, original and cute adventure/romance totally worth reading.
It's also kind of cringey how the MC is both a BA killer pirate and so naive. It just didn't really work for me. I also missed any sort of character development or relationship development. It felt like I should already know all about the characters and society and what was going on (this is book 1 in a series, I obviously do not already know anything)
A few other thoughts:
There are some Mr and Mrs. Smith Vibes SSS.
Just quite a lot going on. Could be a good movie. Knives out, sort of?
The amount of different famous people and works of literature is done in a pretty annoying way that I didn't feel added anything to the work other than a pretentious feeling.
