Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens
5.0
Where the Crawdads Sing is a unique historical fiction novel set in the North Carolina marsh that combines a love story, murder mystery and coming of age tale all in one. It is the story of a girl, Kya, whose family and community abandon her yet through a combination of determination and resilience is able to move forward in life. The loneliness and rejection that Kya feels throughout brought me to tears, but there was also a sense of hope during parts of the book that kept me wanting more.
The marsh and Kya’s interaction with it are so well described that it almost feels like a character instead of the setting. Although there is a fair amount of descriptive language, the narrative keeps moving. Elements of the plot may be too neat or convenient for some readers but this didn’t bother me. I fell in love with this touching story when I read it and I honestly believe most readers will enjoy this one.
