When We Were Bright and Beautiful
by Jillian Medoff
I regret not following the account that recommended this book; their description of When We Were Bright and Beautiful was spot on, and now I can’t find the account to see what other gems they recommend. I really, really, REALLY enjoyed this troubled and twisted read (not sure what that says about me, but I’m just reading what I’m told by internet strangers).
When We Were Bright and Beautiful reads like a suspenseful thriller where plot and revelations drive the story. On the surface this book is about a tight-knit, rich and wealthy family unraveling when their youngest son is accused of rape. We follow this family in the months leading up to the trial - and the tension is brutal.
Told from the perspective of the daughter of the family, we see a beautiful, warm unit. The siblings are close, they share fond memories, still, something feels off. And with each page another red flag seems to be waved and knocked down and raised again. So you’ll HAVE to find out what exactly sounds the alarm bell.
Halfway the book I remember thinking that the suspense was too good I could forgive for the little character development. Only after finishing the book, I finally understood (and appreciated) what the author did.
I really liked it!
