Graveyard of Memories
by Barry Eisler
Barry Eisler's John Rain is a half American, half-Japanese assassin, not quite fitting in anywhere, both in his cultural background, and his career as a soldier and a CIA operative and assassin for hire. In Graveyard of Memories, Eisler takes us back to Rain's early days, as a simple job carrying a bag turns into a deadly game involving the CIA, and Japanese organized crime. While on the run, Rain meets and falls in love with a girl in a wheelchair and tries to come to grips with the assassin he's becoming.
Eisler's book provides a wonderful travelogue of 70's era Japan, evocatively detailing the baths, coffee bars, hotels, parks, and culture of the country. This adds rich layers to the suspense that builds nicely as Rain tries to learn the tricks of his trade as well as determine who he can trust and who is out to burn him.
Highly recommended.
