Read this for a classic’s book club. Do I understand how some describe Fitzgerald’s writing to be poetic and flowery in a good way? Sure. Was he good at writing absolute scumbags in his novels? One hundred percent. Could this have been an interesting, haunting tragedy about said dirtbag that explores the destructive forces of excess wealth and status? Yes, those flowery words could have blossomed had it not been SO POLLUTED by blatant racism, p*dophilia, grooming, sexism, misogyny, abuse, and stigmatization around mental illness. So many wrongs without any better understanding or payoffs or point in my view. The only thing right about this book is that Dick was aptly named.
