I wasn't surprised to see that the author was a birth doula since the book is heavy on childbirth and breastfeeding. This was a free book from Goodreads so I hate not giving it a higher rating but I almost stopped about a third of the way in because the beginning was too slow with too much breastfeeding detail. Then the ending is way too explicit in describing a difficult, almost horrific, childbirth. The plot is good but the writing was too simple for me. It would probably make a good young adult book if a few sections were deleted. I'll always remember this book for its unique story of slavery and the "happy" ending.
