scrooge3 's review for:
The Island of Dr. Moreau
by H.G. Wells
This book is more relevant today than when it was published, considering the ongoing controversy over genetically-modified food. I would even go so far as to say that some of today’s controversy is due to the lingering images from Wells’ book.
There are some big ideas in this book, ideas that are worth discussing. But I felt that Wells didn’t fully explore the ideas. Moreau’s motivations and backstory could have been more detailed. I would have liked to see into the beast folks' minds to find out how the transformations really affected them.
Moreover, I would have liked to see more detail all around, especially the last quarter of the book, which is fairly anticlimactic as written. Another 20-50 pages could have been enough to flesh out the characterizations and actions to make this a true classic of literature rather than just an above-average monster story.
