The Unraveling of Cassidy Holmes
by Elissa R. Sloan
This book took me a little bit to get into, but then once I did, I couldn't put it down. I think what I loved so much about it was that it didn't feel gratuitous. I saw some reviews saying it needed more grit, but I think what's so important about this book is that it shows mental illness in a realistic way. Obviously the world is not one most of us live in, but that slow chipping away at your mental stability is so relatable. Especially when you're that weird age of still feeling like a kid, but you're technically an adult. Life just sometimes throws small punches after small punches, and it can leave you feeling broken down. That's what I loved about this book. It was an escape from reality in the sense that I'd obviously never live in this world, but it also felt real. I could imagine how all those little hits just built and built until Cassidy just withdrew.
I loved the dive into the past and the multiple perspectives. The ending was beautiful, and left you with questions and wanting more, but not in a cliffhanger way.
