Spinning Silver by Naomi Novik

5.0

4.75* A retelling of Rumplestiltskin that was incredibly inventive and engrossing. I'm not a huge fan of fairytale retellings generally, but Naomi Novik's writing is so evocative and Lisa Flanagan's narration was perfect for the wintry setting. It drew me in instantly. My main complaint early on was that the POV changed between characters with no announcement or distinction, but as I also read through the ebook, I realized that was intentional, though I still don't understand why.

I love a story about paying what is due and clearing your debts - it's so satisfying and perfectly balanced in a way that real life is never able to achieve. Having recently read and loved [a:Seanan McGuire|2860219|Seanan McGuire|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1245623198p2/2860219.jpg]'s [b:In an Absent Dream|38244358|In an Absent Dream (Wayward Children, #4)|Seanan McGuire|https://images.gr-assets.com/books/1525436165s/38244358.jpg|59926216]- which was also about giving fair value and repaying your debts, I think I've found a new favorite theme. Perhaps when the news and media is full of stories of people taking advantage of others and gaining their unfair shares and advantages, this is my preferred escapism - a world where unknown magics govern and punish those who give too little and take too much.
