Small Great Things
by Jodi Picoult
Writing this review is tough because the book is decent, but it just doesn't sit right with me that a well known white author is gaining from a story she had no business writing about the black experience. It's a big ick. The book is filled with a lot of microagressions and negative stereotypes in the writing, especially when in Ruth's point of view.
Just because I was irked by that doesn't mean I wasn't still ANGRY and sad reading this entire book. It is not fair how a well qualified, hard working, loyal to her profession, well educated, (insert the many and infinite positive qualities here) black woman could have her career destroyed by one angry white man. But that's our reality (literally).
I think the main takeaway from this book is that white people will never understand the black experience, shouldn't write about the black experience, and that we should check our privilege and use it in productive ways.
