Berserk, Vol. 1 by Kentaro Miura
challenging
dark
fast-paced
4.5
After watching Jacksepticeye play Elden Ring and repeatedly mention the Berserk manga, I figured that it sounded pretty up my alley and luckily my library has digital copies so I can read a bunch of it for free and if I really like it, I can buy the fancy bind ups of them.
Anyways, gotta say that this is definitely very interesting so far - it's got little hooks in me and I want to know more about the world and the characters which is great! Love that Guts is the way that he is (insanely large doesn't-even-count-as-a-sword-anymore + weird stuff about physical touch have got to be two of my favourite kinds of things in media) and while this is for sure gory and brutal, generally I'm ok with dealing with that kind of stuff in manga so it should be all groovy.
I think the only thing that I will need to get used to is the art style, but it's pretty coherent and the more I read the more familiar I will get with the vibes.
2024 reread
I have been having a hankering to reread Berserk for months now, and have finally decided to bite the bullet and holy hell am I glad I did. It's great to be back with Guts and his sword that is much too large to be a sword! Ah I missed the chaos! I imagine I will be rating all of these much higher than last time because come on - it's Berserk and now I know just how good it all is ahh.
